Are you stuck not knowing what to say or do on video?  This is a common problem among many agents, and it can stop you from taking your marketing to the next level.  On this episode of The Hustling Agent, I’m going to show you how to overcome 3 major mental objections that are stopping you from getting on camera.  When you’re able to get past all the roadblocks in your own mind, making video content becomes much easier.

Mental Objection #1: Being On Camera Is Uncomfortable

Broadening your real estate marketing efforts with video can be intimidating, and it’s okay to be nervous.  Your first video will have you questioning how much you blink, if you’re standing awkwardly, or if you talk too loudly or too soft.  In all reality, some of these things will be true of your very first take in front of the lens.  So how do you overcome this uneasiness?

The Fix: Make it a habit.  Remember when you were a kid and you had to learn how to ride a bike or brush your teeth?  It was awkward and weird at first, but the more you did it the more comfortable you became.  Video is no different.  If you’re going to commit to making videos, you need to commit to consistently making videos.

Creating video content is not hard, it’s just new.  New things tend to feel odd the first time you do them, but the only way to get comfortable and grow is by being uncomfortable in the process.

To start making video a habit, you want to employ some time blocking in your schedule.  You need to place equal emphasis on video creation as you would on prospecting or lead generation.  Start by deciding how many videos you want to produce per month, and then divide that number equally out over a month’s time.  For example, you can shoot your videos a month ahead of time and publish them on a schedule.  Set a content creation day and a video distribution day to make sure you have everything ready on time.

Mental Objection #2: It Has To Be Perfect

Many real estate agents procrastinate on creating video content because of fear.  A desire to project the perfect image is noble but unrealistic.  Being worried about how you’ll look on camera, whether you come across as boring, or what people will think of you can halt your use of an amazing marketing tool.

The Fix: Remember that nobody—including you—is perfect.  Embrace your humanity and remember that flaws are part of who we are as a species.  People are generally attracted to authenticity, and you might appear fake if you’re trying to hard to present a perfect version of yourself to your audience.  People won’t expect you to be perfect, either, so why shoot yourself in the foot before you get started?  They will want to see the real you.

Viral videos tend to be real moments, captured on camera.  It’s rare that an obviously staged, curated, and produced clip will garner the same amount of engagement.  Being a little kooky or off-the-wall is much more entertaining and relatable than being stiff and lifeless.

Mental Objection #3: I Don’t Have Any Professional Video Equipment

A common misconception regarding video is that you need state-of-the-art recording gear to be successful.  You may be researching the latest cameras, tripods, and video editing software only to be overwhelmed by the options.

The Fix: You can shoot videos using your phone.  I personally shoot all of my videos using the iPhone 10, and many other brands will produce equally good quality.  My entire setup to create my content costs under $100.  A great video is not about the actual equipment used to film it, but rather the story being told and the way the content is presented and edited.

New things are uncomfortable, but if you want to grow as a realtor, you need to put yourself out there.  So grab your camera, shoot and edit some footage, and put it out there.  Don’t overthink it—just do it!  As always, you can reach out to me if you need any further guidance.
